Starting to SNAP

SNAP-Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
Frank and I are going to challenge ourselves to try to eat healthy, nutritious meals on what was formerly called food stamps and now goes by the acronym of SNAP.
We are starting tomorrow, Jan. 6, 2013.
Frank said I have to let him make the decisions....but of course I will have to put my 2 cents in.  What will we do with $85.63/week?  I will be documenting our plans, choices, menus, some recipes and along the way enlighten ourselves and those that join in to see where our journey will take us........

The maximum in Indiana for family of 2 is $367.00/month approx. $85.63/week.  Single person max. Indiana $200.00/month.

Example of Indiana SNAP Eligibility Table-
Household     Gross Income Monthly  Net Income Monthly  Max. SNAP Amt.
      1                           $1,211                              $931                     $200
      2                             1,640                             1,261                       367
      3                             2,069                             1,591                       526
      4                             2,498                             1,921                       668
      5                             2,927                             2,251                       793

I know some people will say, "that is why they call it supplemental, it is not suppose to be your whole budget".
I say this-
Think about a mother of 1 making $10.00/hr, they do not even qualify for SNAP because their Gross monthly income is $1,733.33/month.  The minimum wage in Indiana is $7.25/hr, which is $15,080.00/yr or $1,256.66/month.  After 10% tax total Net $1,131.  A single person making minimum wage does not qualify for SNAP.
A mother of 1 making minimum wage would qualify.  Now think about all the expenses of their life - housing, clothes for growing children, food, school expenses, car/gas/insurance, medical bills, medications......and all the rest that life throws at people. They have a total with SNAP of $1,498.00 to meet all those needs.  I am pretty sure the food budget consists of the SNAP portion.
The majority of people receiving assistance are hard working people that are trying to support their families, or those with disabilities-both mental and physical.
I do not want to hear about the ones that "milk" the system.  They are criminals and need to be purged.  We as a society can not let those "bad apples" dictate our humanity.

  1. Good luck. I will interested in your journey. Considering I just spent $178 yesterday in my trip to Meijer and that wasn't even a full grocery trip but also cleaning supplies and supplies for invalid care.
