SNAP Week 1 Day 5

We still have $10.45.....might have enough for a big weekend shindig!

Last night Frank and I debated whether to keep or toss out the cabbage and corn beef pot of liquid.  We actually did sit there for several minutes and discuss the pros and cons of a pot of bland cabbage/potato flavored water.  The thumbs down won, no contest.
I could almost see Charlie Chaplin over Frank's shoulder, putting the sole of his shoe into the pot and pretending it was a gourmet meal that you might find on Chef Suzanne 's table.  But I don't want to give the impression that we are suffering.  Both Frank and I agree, we have eaten plenty of food so far this week.
Interestingly enough, today on NPR (National Public Radio) there was a segment on the Science Friday portion of today's show talking about food waste.  Here is the link:  http://sciencefriday.com/segment/09/21/2012/waste-not-the-ugly-truth-about-food-waste-in-america.html
"Each year, Americans waste 33 million tons of food. Dana Gunders, a scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, and author Jonathan Bloom discuss the economic and environmental impacts of food waste, and what can be done to fight the growing problem.  In the SciFri Snack, food and agriculture scientist Dana Gunders tells us that 80% of our water usage is to produce food -- when you waste a meal, you waste more than just what you didn’t eat."
We are learning to take some time and think about the choices we make as we shop.  Why buy fresh foods and let it go to waste due to poor planning?  Everyone drives by food stores on their way to any location, most likely several stores, several times a day.  Pick up only what you need.
A stereotype of a "hen-pecked" husband- the guy whose wife gave him a grocery list or called the office to tell him to pick up a few things on his way home from work, did that start in the 1950's?
Well, how efficient was that!  Why not stop on the way?  Good use of resources!
I would never call Frank "hen-pecked", though he might accuse me of squawking at times.  Most of our shopping is done en route to or from some destination.

Yummy breakfast this morning: Chef Frank's homemade Rye toast topped with egg, creole seasoned cream cheese, sprinkled with Chef Frank's very own Tri-Chili Pepper powder, sliced oranges and......coffee!

Frank packed our lunches, corn beef and Swiss cheese on rye, fresh homemade coleslaw and tortilla chips for a snack.
Dinner was delish!
Ruben Sandwiches and a side of slaw......a true New York deli delight!
 Spent
$0.00 nada cha ching!
